EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Learning. Connecting. Growing.

PROGRAMS

For Brighter Days

We offer educational programs through our approved onsite school plus day training to enhance adaptive living skills. As they acquire new skills, residents gain a sense of autonomy, personal choice and greater independence. We also recognize that everyone likes to have a good time. Community outings as well as quiet activities in-house help broaden our residents’ awareness and interest in their environment.

Therapeutic Day School

The School at Walter Lawson is a nonpublic special education facility that provides educational services to students between ages 3 and 21 who have severe and profound disabilities and medical needs.

Our mission is to promote learning, dignity and quality of life for students in an environment that furthers individuality.

Learning to Thrive

  • Students have access to high quality educational services onsite in a program equipped to meet their unique needs.
  • The curriculum is individualized and multisensory based.
  • Small class sizes.

The School at Walter Lawson is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and employs licensed teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses and therapy staff.

Day Training Program

Our Day Training Program and Community Day Services focus on the development and enhancement of daily adaptive living skills, such as motor skills, range of motion, cognitive awareness, communication and activities of daily living. We make learning fun and love seeing our residents smile as they accomplish a new goal.

Team members are highly qualified to support residents' needs with Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and specialized adaptive equipment to enhance the learning process.

Improving Quality of Life

The program’s intent is to:

  1. Continue to expand upon previously acquired skills of each person served.
  2. Work toward independent living through use of interdisciplinary skill training.
  3. Develop individualized program plans that have functional goals rather than task-oriented goals.
  4. Provide functional recreational activities.
  5. Provide community support.

The Day Training Program is licensed by the Illinois Department of Human Services.

You can tell that the staff here really love the children in their care. There is a real sense of family and unity with everyone who works and volunteers here. They truly are committed to giving the children who live at Walter Lawson’s the best quality of life possible.
